AC Short Cycling: Why Your AC Keeps Turning On and Off

Does your air conditioner turn on, run for just a few minutes, shut off, and then start the cycle all over again? This is called short cycling, and it's one of the most damaging things that can happen to your AC system. Each startup puts enormous stress on the compressor, and constant cycling dramatically increases wear, energy consumption, and the risk of a complete breakdown.

What Causes AC Short Cycling?

Oversized AC System — An AC that's too large for your home cools the air near the thermostat too quickly, causing it to shut off before the rest of the house is comfortable. This is the most common cause of chronic short cycling and can only be fixed by replacing the system with a properly sized unit.

Dirty Air Filter — A severely clogged filter restricts airflow, causing the system to overheat and trigger the high-limit safety switch. The system shuts down, cools off, restarts, overheats again — and the cycle repeats.

Low Refrigerant — Low refrigerant causes low system pressure, which can trigger the low-pressure safety switch. The system shuts down to protect the compressor, then restarts when pressure equalizes slightly.

Thermostat Problems — A malfunctioning thermostat may read temperatures incorrectly, sending start and stop signals at the wrong times. A thermostat in direct sunlight or near a heat source can also cause false readings.

Frozen Evaporator Coil — A frozen coil triggers safety shutdowns. As the ice thaws slightly, the system restarts, refreezes, and shuts down again.

Electrical Issues — Failing capacitors, loose wiring, or corroded connections can cause intermittent power interruptions that look like short cycling.

Why Short Cycling Is Dangerous

  • Compressor wear increases dramatically with each startup cycle
  • Energy bills spike because startup is the most energy-intensive phase
  • Your home never reaches a comfortable, consistent temperature
  • System lifespan is significantly shortened
  • Other components (contactors, capacitors) wear out faster
  • What to Do About Short Cycling

Step 1: Check and replace your air filter — this solves the problem in many cases.

Step 2: Make sure nothing is blocking your vents or return air grilles.

Step 3: Check your thermostat location — if it's in direct sunlight or near a heat source, it may need to be relocated.

Step 4: If the problem persists, call a professional. Short cycling has too many potential causes for effective DIY diagnosis.
