Your HVAC system is one of the most complex mechanical systems in your home, with dozens of moving parts, electrical components, and fluid systems. When something goes wrong, it often announces itself with a distinctive sound. Learning to identify these sounds can help you catch problems early and communicate effectively with your HVAC technician.
Indoor Unit Sounds
Whooshing or rushing air — Normal. This is air flowing through your ductwork. If it's louder than usual, check for closed vents or a dirty filter.
Clicking at startup/shutdown — Normal. Relays and contactors make clicking sounds during normal operation.
Continuous clicking — Not normal. May indicate a failing thermostat, control board issue, or electrical problem. Schedule service.
Rattling — Check for loose vent covers, duct connections, or panels. If the sound comes from inside the unit, a component may be loose.
Squealing — A worn blower motor belt or bearing. Schedule service before it fails completely.
Humming — A low hum is normal. A loud hum may indicate a failing blower motor or transformer.
Gurgling or bubbling — May indicate a refrigerant leak or a clogged condensate drain. Schedule service.
Outdoor Unit Sounds
Steady humming — Normal compressor operation.
Loud buzzing — Could be a failing contactor, loose wiring, or a dying compressor. Schedule service soon.
Banging or clanking — Loose or broken internal component. Turn off the system and call for repair.
Screeching — Failing fan motor bearing. The motor needs replacement before it seizes.
Hissing — Possible refrigerant leak. Schedule service promptly.
Clicking repeatedly without starting — Likely a failing capacitor or contactor. The system is trying to start but can't.
Ductwork Sounds
Popping or banging — Metal ducts expanding and contracting with temperature changes. Common and usually harmless, though it can be reduced with duct modifications.
Whistling — Air being forced through a small opening — often a gap in ductwork or a partially closed damper.
Rumbling — Air turbulence in undersized or poorly designed ductwork.
When to Act
Immediate (turn off system): Grinding, loud banging from compressor, burning smell
Soon (schedule within days): Squealing, persistent buzzing, hissing
Monitor: Popping ducts, minor rattling, intermittent clicking
