Walking down the air filter aisle at your local hardware store can be overwhelming. Dozens of options at wildly different price points, all claiming to be the best. Here's a straightforward guide to help you choose the right filter for your home and HVAC system.
Understanding MERV Ratings
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates a filter's ability to capture particles. The scale runs from 1 to 20. Higher MERV = better filtration, but also more airflow restriction. The key is finding the right balance for your system.
Filter Types Compared
Fiberglass Filters (MERV 1–4) — The cheapest option ($1–$3). These capture large dust particles but do little for allergens, pollen, or fine particles. They protect your equipment but not your air quality. Change monthly.
Pleated Filters (MERV 8–13) — The best choice for most homes ($5–$15). The pleated design provides more surface area for filtration without excessive airflow restriction. MERV 8 is good for general use; MERV 11–13 is better for allergy sufferers. Change every 60–90 days.
High-Efficiency Pleated (MERV 14–16) — Hospital-grade filtration. These capture very fine particles but can restrict airflow in residential systems not designed for them. Only use if your HVAC professional confirms your system can handle it.
HEPA Filters (MERV 17–20) — True HEPA filters capture 99.97% of particles. However, they're too restrictive for standard residential HVAC systems. They require a dedicated HEPA filtration system installed alongside your HVAC.
Washable/Electrostatic Filters (MERV 4–8) — Reusable filters that you wash monthly. They save money over time but require consistent cleaning to be effective. If not cleaned regularly, they can actually reduce air quality.
4-Inch Media Filters (MERV 8–13) — Thicker filters that fit in special filter cabinets. They last 6–12 months and provide excellent filtration with minimal airflow restriction. If your system has a media filter cabinet, this is the best option.
Our Recommendation for Georgia Homes
For most homes in the Carrollton area, we recommend a pleated filter with MERV 8–11, changed every 60–90 days (more frequently during pollen season). This provides:
If you have family members with severe allergies or asthma, consider upgrading to MERV 13 — but check with your HVAC technician first to ensure your system can handle the increased restriction.
