Humidity Control in Georgia: Why Your Home Feels Muggy and How to Fix It

Georgia is famous for its humidity. Summer dew points regularly exceed 70°F, creating that thick, sticky feeling that makes outdoor activities miserable. But what about inside your home? If your house feels muggy even with the AC running, you have a humidity problem — and it's more than just uncomfortable.

Why Indoor Humidity Matters

The ideal indoor relative humidity is 40–50%. When it climbs above 60%, you'll experience:

  • Discomfort — Muggy air makes you feel warmer, so you lower the thermostat and increase energy costs
  • Mold growth — Mold thrives above 60% humidity, growing on walls, ceilings, and inside ductwork
  • Dust mites — These allergen-producing pests flourish in humid environments
  • Wood damage — Excess moisture causes wood floors, doors, and trim to swell and warp
  • Musty odors — That distinctive "old house" smell is often caused by excess humidity
  • Why Your AC Isn't Controlling Humidity

Your air conditioner removes humidity as a byproduct of cooling — moisture condenses on the cold evaporator coil. But several factors can prevent adequate dehumidification:

Oversized AC — An oversized system cools the air quickly but doesn't run long enough to remove adequate moisture. Short run cycles mean less dehumidification.

Fan set to "on" instead of "auto" — When the fan runs continuously, moisture on the evaporator coil re-evaporates back into your air between cooling cycles. Always set the fan to "auto."

Leaky ductwork — Ducts running through humid attics or crawl spaces can pull in moisture-laden air.

Old or inefficient system — Older systems with single-speed compressors are less effective at humidity control than modern variable-speed systems.

    Solutions for Better Humidity Control

Set your fan to "auto" — This is the simplest and most impactful change. It allows moisture to drain from the coil between cycles.

Don't oversize your replacement system — When it's time for a new system, proper load calculations ensure the right size for both cooling and dehumidification.

Consider a variable-speed system — Variable-speed compressors and blowers run longer at lower speeds, providing superior dehumidification.

Add a whole-home dehumidifier — For homes with persistent humidity problems, a whole-home dehumidifier works alongside your AC to maintain optimal humidity levels.

Seal air leaks and ductwork — Preventing humid outdoor air from entering your home reduces the moisture load on your AC.

Use exhaust fans — Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans during and after showers and cooking to remove moisture at the source.
