HVAC Emergency Tips: What to Do During a Power Outage or System Failure

Georgia weather can be extreme — from summer heat waves exceeding 100°F to winter ice storms that knock out power for days. When your HVAC system fails during these events, knowing what to do can protect your family's health and prevent damage to your home.

During a Summer AC Failure

Immediate steps:

  • Close all blinds and curtains to block solar heat
  • Open windows on opposite sides of the house to create cross-ventilation (only if outdoor temp is below indoor temp)
  • Use battery-powered fans if available
  • Stay hydrated — drink water frequently
  • Move to the lowest level of your home (heat rises)
  • Avoid using the oven, dryer, or other heat-generating appliances
  • Protect vulnerable family members: Elderly adults, young children, and people with medical conditions are most at risk from heat. If indoor temperatures exceed 85°F and you can't cool the home, consider relocating to a friend's house, community cooling center, or hotel.

Protect your home: If you'll be without AC for an extended period in high humidity, run dehumidifiers (if you have power) to prevent mold growth.

    During a Winter Heating Failure

    Immediate steps:

  • Close off unused rooms to concentrate heat in living areas
  • Seal gaps under doors with rolled towels
  • Layer clothing and use blankets
  • If you have a fireplace, use it (ensure the chimney is clear)
  • Open curtains on sunny windows during the day, close them at night
  • Use your oven to cook a meal (the heat helps), but never use it as a space heater
  • Prevent pipe freezing: If temperatures drop below freezing and you have no heat:

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls
  • Let faucets drip slightly to keep water moving
  • If you have access, shut off the main water supply and drain pipes
  • Never use these for indoor heating: Gas grills, charcoal grills, camp stoves, or generators. These produce carbon monoxide and are deadly when used indoors.

    After Power Is Restored

Don't rush to restart your HVAC. Wait 5–10 minutes after power returns before turning on your system. This allows electrical components to stabilize and prevents compressor damage from low-voltage startup.

Check your thermostat settings — power surges can reset programmable thermostats.

Listen for unusual sounds when the system starts. Power surges can damage capacitors and control boards.
